Made for it stitch by stitch
But God will look to every soul like its first love because He is its first love. Your place in heaven will seem to be made for you and you alone, because you were made for it—made for it stitch by stitch as a glove is made for a hand.

Inexhaustible place
My own experience has shown me that it is possible to live in and attentively study the same small place decade after decade, and find that it ceaselessly evades and exceeds comprehension. There is nothing that it can be reduced to, because "it" is always, and not predictably, changing. It is never the same two days running, and the better one pays attention the more aware one becomes of these differences. Living and working in the place day by day, one is continuously revising one's knowledge of it, continuously being surprised by it and in error about it. And even if the place stayed the same, one would be getting older and growing in memory and experience, and would need for that reason alone to work from revision to revision. One knows one's place, that is to say, only within limits, and the limits are in one's mind, not in the place. This is a description of life in time in the world. A place, apart form our now always possible destruction of it, is inexhaustible. It cannot be altogether known, seen, understood, or appreciated.

Ideas people
The effect of mass migration has been the creation of radically new types
of human being: people who root themselves in ideas rather than places, in
memories as much as in material things; people who have been obliged to
define themselves -- because they are so defined by others -- by their
otherness; people in whose deepest selves strange fusions occur,
unprecedented unions between what they were and where they find themselves.
The migrant suspects reality: having experienced several ways of being, he
understands their illusory nature.

Place
Place is space that has historical meanings, where some things have
happened that are now remembered and that provide continuity and identity
across generations. Place is space in which important words have been spoken
that have established identity, defined vocation, and envisioned destiny.
Place is space in which vows have been exchanged, promises have been made,
and demands have been issued. Place is indeed a protest against the
unpromising pursuit of space. It is a declaration that our humanness cannot
be found in escape, detachment, absence of commitment, and undefined
freedom.

Placelessness
Globalization and the horizontal integration of corporate structures have more recently introduced the notion of placelessness into the modern vocabulary. Big-box chain retail stores and identical, production-built tract houses can be understood as placeless places. These are technically places in that stories are lived in them, but the generic nature and short time span of the buildings make them resistant to holding the stories that are generated there. More and more of the contemporary landscape is being taken over by developments in which it can be very hard to tell where one happens to be located.

A good setting
God not only created humanity good, God also placed us in a good setting. This setting was both sufficient to meet our material needs and a delightful place characterized by beauty and variety. To not be attached to a particular place (or to be displaced) is portrayed in Scripture as a dreadful consequence of sin, and not a marker of freedom. To experience shalom is not to be delivered from place, but to experience sustenance and delight in a particular place as we wait for the good place that is being prepared for us.

Place
Most of us spend so much time thinking about where we have been or where we are supposed to be going that we have a hard time recognizing where we actually are. When someone asks us where we want to be in our lives, the last thing that occurs to us is to look down at our feet and say, "Here, I guess, since this is where I am."

Place
A place, I repeat, is a somewhere that isn’t going anywhere. So an experience of a place can befall us only when we do the same. David James Duncan
