It became clear to me that hospitable gathering places where people shared their lives and spoke openly about brokenness and healing were great good places of the heart and spirit.... Travelling in Europe in the early 1960s and being part of the birth of the espresso bar movement in the United States convinced me that these kinds of places might become for my generation a kind of common ground between the bartender and the priest. My gut told me that our culture needed more soul friends in the form of spiritual bartenders and coffeehouse priests.
